Check It Out: Miami Beach Botanical Garden

When a person thinks of South Beach, the beach, sun, night life, parties all come to mind. However, the area has so much more to offer for people of all ages. One standout gem in South Beach is the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. The Garden is a venue for art, environmental, and cultural programs. The Garden is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In 1996, some Miami Beach residents approached the city to create the Miami Beach Garden Conservancy, a non-profit organization that would restore a Garden Center that was created in 1966 but had deteriorated due to economic recessions, wars, and hurricanes; the garden was gone even before the Art Deco rebirth happened in the area in the 1980s. Now, the Miami Beach Botanical Garden is a public/private partnership, owned by the City of Miami Beach and the Conservancy.

The mission of the Garden is “to promote environmental enjoyment, stewardship and sustainability through education, the arts, and interaction with the natural world.” The Garden provides a tranquil place for people in an urban setting.

In the Garden, you can take a self-guided tour, which teaches about signature plantings and the natural history of Miami Beach. You can also schedule to have a tour given by a guide. Guided tours come with a $5 suggested donation. Visitors are allowed to bring their own food to enjoy.

The Garden is filled with flowering trees, palms, a Japanese garden, orchids, a native garden, water fountains, ponds, bromeliads, and an edible garden that contains pineapples, pomegranates, coffee, figs, and raspberries. The Garden often harvests fresh food and herbs from this garden to use during workshops, mixers, and other events.

For a sampling on the types of things that go on in the Garden, here are some events and workshops occurring during the month of July: A compost workshop, yoga in the garden, summer art camp, a BBQ, meditation sessions, and art in the park.
